I remember the moment I made my first landing on Antarctica, with 59 other passengers from our small ship - a converted Russian research vessel. It had snowed the night before. Our expedition team needed shovels to cut steps through the drifts so we could get from the shore up on to the snowpack at Orne Harbour. The atmosphere was electric as many of my fellow travelers celebrated arriving on their 7th continent - hugs and photos all around. I remember that an Australian traveler pulled out a stuffed koala for her photo, but I don’t recall seeing any other flags being carried or displayed back then.
In the years since, bringing a flag for your photos has become a common practice. But if you’ve been shopping online for such a flag, you’ve probably found that most are not designed or made with travelers in mind. Traditional flags have hard nylon spines and metal grommets - and they’re huge! Smaller souvenir-type flags are printed on cheap fabric with inkjet printers that smudge and bleed. And you know what drives me absolutely nuts? The fold lines and creases. Who wants to have to iron a flag when you’re in Antarctica?
So I set out to create a set of flags for travelers to Antarctica that accomplished the following:
• Design distinct, compelling flags that are specific to your expedition and/or moment.
• Offer manageable sizes so people don’t have to wrestle with a 3-foot flag in the wind.
• Print them using bright colors and a durable process that can stand up to getting wet.
• Use a soft material that resists wrinkles and creases and has a hem so it won’t fray.
Small Batch Production:
All of these flags are printed and sewn in small batches, so if you see something that’s out of stock, please e-mail me and I can add your order into our next print run.
Custom Options:
If you’d like to modify any of these designs, I can do that for you. For instance, on some of the flags, there’s room to put a name or a logo. (A note to agents and agencies, these make great send-off gifts for your clients!)
